Senate science committee to examine Greenland purchase before NASA Administrator interview

The Senate committee for Commerce, Science, and Transportation, the one that oversees NASA, is holding a hearing on the potential benefits of purchasing Greenland, while the nation’s space program is in need of leadership from the nominated administrator and private astronaut, Jared Isaacman.

Chair of the Senate committee, Ted Cruz, announced the hearing this week and that it would focus on examining the strategic importance of Greenland to the United States if acquired, a deal that neither the people of Greenland nor the Kingdom of Denmark, which controls it, want.

“Acquiring Greenland would have enormous economic benefits for the United States,” Cruz said in a statement. “The island’s natural resources like rare earth elements would strengthen American supply chains and industries. The island’s strategic location in the Arctic would provide huge advantages in monitoring growing Russian and Chinese bellicosity in the region. I believe this hearing will show the growing geopolitical importance of Greenland and why it is in the U.S.’s best interest to explore potential opportunities for the territory.”

This committee is also the first stop for Jared Isaacman, nominated to be NASA’s next administrator, before the full Senate votes on his confirmation. Isaacman was nominated on President Trump’s first day in office, the fastest it can possibly be done. However, as expected, the Senate has focused on filling cabinet-level positions like the Secretary of State, Defense, etc.

It was expected that a potential confirmation could take place in a few weeks, and while a February confirmation would still be historically quick, the move to focus on Greenland before it by the committee is a baffling decision.

Several factors could explain why Isaacman has still not appeared before the committee, one being that he’s not prepared yet. Although he’s had months to study for the job interview, there is reason to believe that NASA needs a leader sooner rather than later.

Ars Technica has reported that the morale at NASA is “absurdly low,” as the agency, which is one of the most diverse and open, has had to shut down all of its DEI initiatives, and several science research committees have also ceased daily operations. It is likely that under a second Trump administration, NASA will have a focus on human spaceflight and exploration rather than scientific and climate change research.

No directive has been set yet by President Trump or Elon Musk, who has gained strong control over the government’s operations through his Department of Government Efficiency. Through emails pushing civil servants to resign, legal murkiness surrounds its ability to shut down agencies like USAID, and it is staffed mostly by employees of Musk’s other companies like Tesla and SpaceX. The vibe of many government employees is to please Musk or be sacked.

Several key issues at NASA will require both an administrator and directives from President Trump. Those are:

  • Future of Mars Sample Return
  • Future of the Artemis Program and its SLS rocket and Gateway space station
  • Moon or Mars
  • Retirement of the ISS
  • Overall direction of non-space exploration missions by NASA

Isaacman recently shared that he’s been preparing for his confirmation and is still in the middle of transitioning to a new CEO of Shift4, the payment processing company he founded. The latter issue is likely the reason for the delay in his hearing. However, none of the issues listed above can be solved until he comes on board.
