Varda Space Industries accomplished a significant feat by safely returning a capsule to Earth, marking a pivotal moment in space material production for the company. The successful touchdown occurred at the Utah Test and Training Range, located west of Salt Lake City.
The capsule, a key component of Varda’s W-Series mission 1, landed in the Utah desert February 21, showcasing the company’s innovative initiatives and capabilities in harnessing space for unique manufacturing purposes.
Varda’s methodology involves creating diverse products, such as pharmaceuticals, in the weightless environment of low Earth orbit and returning these items to the planet in specialized capsules. These capsules are engineered to reenter Earth’s atmosphere at velocities reaching Mach 25, encountering temperatures thrice as high as the Sun’s surface.

The capsule boasts a diameter of roughly 90 centimeters and a weight of less than 90 kilograms. It was launched aboard a Rocket Lab Photon spacecraft during SpaceX’s Transporter-8 rideshare mission in June 2023. The mission aimed to explore the viability of space manufacturing technologies.
Varda’s journey to this milestone encountered challenges, including delays in obtaining a commercial reentry license from the Federal Aviation Administration and securing the necessary clearances from the U.S. Air Force for landing at the Utah test range. Nevertheless, perseverance led to Varda securing the FAA reentry license February 14, culminating in the successful landing a week later.
The mission’s reentry phase involved sophisticated orbital adjustments from circular to elliptical, meticulously executed by Rocket Lab’s Photon, leading to the capsule’s release just before reentry. The main spacecraft met its end by reentering and disintegrating as planned.
Rocket Lab’s CEO, Peter Beck, lauded the mission as an extraordinary achievement and a testament to the collaborative spirit between Rocket Lab and Varda teams.
Varda is set to transport the capsule to its California headquarters for comprehensive analysis. The company has pledged to share reentry data with NASA and the Air Force. Such extreme conditions serve as an ideal proving ground for the Air Force to test and assess materials intended for the next generation of hypersonic aircraft and missiles.
